This is a very unusual item – a saltern, made in Soviet-era Russia around 1950, and mimicking the style of late 19th and early 20th century imperial Russian silverware.
The saltern and the spoon come with an original red gift box, with a stamp "Made in USSR", placed on the top right corner of the box.
The product that you are seeing on the photo is a nickel /silver alloy (70/30) called ЮММЕТ i.e. "Jummet", Juvelirnaja metal and most obviously also electro plated.
Standing on three small feet and beautifully decorated, the item can be a perfect part of your collection. Both, the spoon and the saltern, are marked 9ЮММЕТ.
Size
The salt is 2.5” wide and 1” high, the spoon is 3” long. Together they weigh 103gr, although most of that will be the glass liner, which is stuck in place.

Excellent, brand new, not used
"ЮММЕТ" is a compound mark. It consists of two parts:
- "ЮМ" it's mark of jeweler factory of the town of Mstera (Мстера). Mstera it is the well-known center of art national creativity.
- «МЕТ» it's mark for a designation not a silver alloy (simple metal). Usually it is a Neusilber (Cu, Ni, Zn) or Melkchior(cupronickel) (Cu, Ni). A galvanic silverplate.
- "ЮМ" it's mark of jeweler factory of the town of Mstera (Мстера). Mstera it is the well-known center of art national creativity.

ReplyDeleteI-OMMET is not the name of the alloy. As stated later, it is the factory stamp of Mstera Jewellers. The '9' in front of this stamp means this item was made in 1969.
The name of the metal is melchior, a copper-nickel-zinc alloy, made to imitiate silver, but having absolutely no silver in it. Sometime in the '60s, most of these salts became silverplated.
This description is the most confused collection of information and misinformation that I've seen about these salts.
